Friday's Featured Photo

Today's photo is from a family album of Uncle Bob's (Robley Hansen).  Bob is with his daughter Millicent Gay and his father John Hartwig Hansen.  Gay was born March 9, 1934, so this was probably taken around the  summer or early fall of 1935. The location may be the ranch house next to the Idaho Maryland Mine.  It looks like Gay is having an animated conversation with her grandfather!

Friday's Featured Photo

I recently discovered this picture in the collection of family pictures from Cousin Skip (Hansen).  It took me a few minutes to figure out who these little girls were, and how they fit into the family tree.

On the back, written in faded ink, is "Marjorie Inez and Evelyn Adele Burroughs August 15, 1905".  The picture was taken in Seattle, Washington.

The little one on the left is Evelyn Adele Burroughs (Burrows), born April 11, 1905 and her older sister is Marjorie Inez Burroughs (Burrows), born May 12, 1904.  They are the daughters of Don Francis Burrows, older brother to my Great Grandmother Vere Burrows Hansen.

Marjorie was born in California, and her middle name was given in remembrance of Inez Francis (sister to Don and Vere) who passed away in 1899 at the age of 8 in Grass Valley, California.  Evelyn was born in Washington state.  Adele is the middle name of another Burrows sister, Wanda Adele Burrows Nankervis.

Don used the spelling of Burrows on all of his official records, so I am not sure how the spelling of Burroughs made its way onto the back of this photo. But it is very precious!

My post of July 26, 2020, entitled "A Hurd of Burrows",  lists all of the Burrows children (there were 12).  I do not have any pictures of Don Burrows, but I have several letters he wrote, as well as this picture.  He eventually settled in San Francisco with his family (wife Lillian and their last child Don Steven) and was also a lawyer by profession, as were both of his parents.

Marjorie and Evelyn, it was nice to meet you!

Written in Vere Hansen's handwriting....a temperature of 106 degrees is unusual for Grass Valley!

The Union's temperature records only go back to 1960 for Grass Valley, but according to the Union, a temperature of 108 was reached on July 16, 1972.  It was a particularly hot summer that year and the 108 temperature came during the hottest three day run in city history with temps of 105 on the 14th, 106 on the 15th and 108 on the 16th.

The hottest day of July for 2021 in Grass Valley was 106 on July 10th.

The 1942 temperature must have been one to remember, too!  Notice the American Flag waving from the porch.  Jack Hansen was serving  in WWII at this point in time.

Friday's Featured Photo (s)

Unknown Photo from Hansen File.  Clown, Gypsy and Guy with Glasses.

This photograph was in the Hansen File.  On the back is written "H. Lockwood 11/34".  It looks like a Halloween party!  This picture's context was unknown to me (Why was it in with the Hansen family pictures? Who was H. Lockwood?  Was he the Clown or the Guy with the Glasses?)

..... until a few days ago when I found this photo in my cousin Skip's garage....

On the back is written "H. Lockwood 11/34"!   As I was looking at this picture I recognized Uncle Jack (Jack Hansen) sitting on the floor, third from the right.  The Guy with Glasses and the  young man dressed as a Clown are sitting directly to the right of Uncle Jack. The young woman dressed as a gypsy is in the top row, third from the left.

Uncle Jack was 28 years old in 1934.  He was living and working in Sacramento, California as a clerk by the 1930 US Census, but in 1933 he was back in Grass Valley working for PG&E (Pacific Gas and Electric) and going on hikes with the YMCA Hiking Club. This may have been a group of friends from Grass Valley.  They appear to be having a very good time.  H. Lockwood must have been a good friend of Uncle Jack's.  I still don't know if he was the Clown, or the Guy with Glasses.  Or...was H. Lockwood the Gypsy??

I would love to know which building this picture was taken in!  It may have been taken at the Bourne Cottage Clubhouse (now a part of the Empire Mine State Historic Park).

And, another photo mystery solved.  Mostly.

Friday's Featured Photo

   "La Leva 1907 Cortemilia"

From the Brondolo Bertanasco Capra  file.  Unknown group of young men from Cortemilia, Italy.

Enlarged

Cortemilia is just a short 8 miles away from Vesime, Italy, home of the Brondolos and Bertanoscos.  There must be a relative in this picture somewhere! (Update:  Second row from top, second man in on left.  Possibly, or probably, Frank Brondolo, born in 1901).

Update....my sister Stephanie did some digging into the term La Leva.  Leva is translated into conscription or draft.  In general, Italian conscription was mandatory from 1860-1923 and conscription laws varied based on location and time period during these times.   The ufficio di leva (draft office) in each town was required to send a list of males between the ages of 17 and 20 to the consiglio di leva (draft board) .  The lista di leva records can be found for all male ancestors born after 1855 and earlier in some areas of the north. These lists can be an extremely useful source of information, as they contain quite a bit of vital information.   (The Family Tree Italian Genealogy Guide: How to Trace Your Family Tree in Italy by Melanie Holtz 2017).

So, knowing that Cortemilia is in the province of Cuneo in the norther Italian region of Piedmont should be a wonderful starting place for more in depth Italian family research.  I haven't even begun to work on Italian genealogy!  This picture is a great starting place.  A relative may be on the lista di leva for this area and may be a part of this group.  But why are do they have flowers in their lapels?? And what does that flag say??

Frank Henry Brondolo was the son of Pietro Brondolo and Caterina Bertanosco.  He was Terry (Nino)'s brother.  We called him Uncle Frank.

Friday's Featured Photo

Today's picture is from the Levers/King file and is of an unknown wedding party.  This was probably taken in Cornwall, circa 1920's.  I would love to know who the lovely bride was!

Friday's Featured Photo

In honor of Mother's Day this last weekend I am posting this picture from the Hansen files.   It is of an unknown woman holding an unidentified baby, possibly sometime around the late 1930's or early  40's.   I love the embroidered apron with the polka dot day dress and the rolled up sleeves.  This picture captured just a quick little moment in time.  The woman looks like she was in the middle of her daily chores and routines, and took a few moments to have her picture taken with the baby.  Could it be hers? Is she a neighbor? Is she a relative that is visiting?  I would love to know.  This is such a sweet picture.

Friday's Featured Photo

This week's picture came out of the Hansen files.  There is nothing written on the back to identify anyone, but when I scanned faces, I thought I could see a very young Uncle Jack sitting above the Pacific Sightseeing sign.  He was born in 1906, and if he was around 14-15-16 this would date the photograph at around the early 1920's.  So, if anyone knows their hat styles from the 1920's, please feel free to help me date this picture!  Even if it is not Uncle Jack it  is just fun to look at all the hats......

Here is a close up.

Friday's Featured Photo

This is an unidentified photograph of a young woman taken at the turn of the century.  It was found in the Burrows file, along with this photo below, which I believe is the same woman.  There were no other clues written on either picture.
Which photograph do you think was taken first? Which one was later?

Enlarged version of the first photograph.

Friday's Featured Photo

**************************************************************************

I have toyed with this idea for several months, so today I am launching a new blog theme that will feature one specific photograph every Friday.....I have a growing pile of photographs full of unknown (ukn) family or friends of family.  I also have pictures that never made it into blog posts for one reason or another, and I want to add these so that family members can enjoy them as much as I have.  Any help with identification would be appreciated!  I hope you enjoy this new addition to our family stories.

**************************************************************************

This photograph was in with  the Burrows family pictures, and all the identification I have is "Dolores Street" written on the back.  These two girls are simply precious, and I would love to know who they are!
