#52Ancestors52Weeks....Week 29...Automobiles...Granna and Nana Pose With Their Automobiles

"Granna in the 'Ford'"
From Dorothy Hayes' Memory Book
Location of the photograph unknown.  Road trip?

Dorothy Hayes' Memory Book (cover)

Automobiles...I found these pictures of my great great grandmother Anna Levers King (Granna) and my great grandmother Emma King Hayes (Nana) inside of a small picture album that belonged to Dorothy Hayes (my great Auntie Dot). She added these photographs taken in the mid 1920's and early 30's to her Memory Book and I thought they would be fun to share this week.  These women were proud of their automobiles!

A page from Auntie Dot's photograph album...

The caption reads "Look out Granna!"

This series of  photographs may have been taken by Charles King.

The caption reads "Just going for a little ride".  This looks to be a Model T Ford 1925 model?

 "Granna's pond and Ford"

Photograph taken on the King's San Jose Ranch

Granna  "At the Dumbarton Bridge"
Photograph taken by Charles King (Papa).

This photograph had a story on the back...Betty was my grandmother.  The Dumbarton Bridge was opened on January 27, 1927 and was the first vehicle bridge to span the San Francisco Bay.  It was 1.63 miles long and was seen as a symbol of the future.  It was 2 lanes, 23 feet wide and had a drawbridge. That must have been a site to see in their Model T Ford!

The caption reads "Mamma and the Kids".  On the back is written "Mother, Frances and Betty".

Photograph possibly taken by Dorothy Hayes or George Van Duzer, location unknown, possibly Grass Valley.  Nana married George Van Duzer in 1926  and this may have been his car.

This is my great grandmother, Emma King Hayes Van Duzer, with two of her daughters, Fran and Betty.  My grandmother looks to be about 8 or 9 years old which would put this picture at around 1926 or 1927. I'd love to know the make and year of the car.   Emma (Nana) was said to have been one of the first women in Grass Valley to learn to drive a car.  She would have needed to, as after 1924 she was divorced from Lester Hayes and had three girls to get from here to there!

"Dot, Gertrude and the 'Blue Pirate' 1930

Auntie Dot added her own experiences with her friend Gertrude to her album,  posing in front of the "Blue Pirate"!  Auntie Dot was 20 years old in 1930.

 "Dot and Gertrude 1930"

I wonder what adventures Auntie Dot and Gertrude had in the "Blue Pirate"!  I can imagine two independent girls in their early twenties having many adventures together in their own car.  Thank you, Auntie Dot, for sharing a small sampling of your Memory Book.

#52Ancestors52Weeks...Week 15 Theme: School Days....Dorothy Ross Hayes Graduates From Eighth Grade

 Dorothy Ross Hayes
(b. 17 May 1910-d. 28 March 1989)
Photograph taken at Papa and Granna's "Ranch" in Santa Clara, California June 1925.

 Auntie Dot holding her diploma

The theme for this week is School Days...my Great Aunt (Auntie Dot) saved mementos  from her 8th Grade graduation from the Cupertino Union Grammar School in June of 1925.  They are a sweet reminder of  her school days and give us a glimpse of how this particular educational passage was celebrated way back when.

Auntie Dot's School Days Album, diploma and ribbon.
The book with its sewn binding is falling apart and the ribbons are faded. The diploma itself is in very good condition.

Auntie Dot's dress was most certainly made by her mother Emma King Hayes or her grandmother (Granna) Anna Levers King,
(Granna-pronounced Gran-ay).  This prune orchard (The Ranch) was located on Grant Road in Santa Clara, California.

This class picture was in Auntie Dot's Memory Book (her photograph album).  Can you spot her right in the middle? All the girls' dresses were the same style and pattern.

  My Memories of School Days.....

Cupertino Union Grammar School Class of 1925
This school was located at Vista Drive and Stevens Creek Blvd. in Cupertino. The area is now home to Apple Inc. and Silicon Valley.

I believe the ribbon's on Auntie Dot's diploma were originally  apricot and white.

 Sports....Go Cupertino girls!

 Classmates signatures...

A dinner was held for the graduates....

Plays given by graduating classes were popular around this time....

The Reserve Club was sponsored by the YWCA and started in 1918. It's goal was to help girls aged 12-18 develop a well-balanced personality, grow physically and take on social responsibility.  Most girls at this time belonged to clubs or societies.

Labeled "Girl Reserve Salute"...."Dorothy"... date unknown, but taken around 1925.
From Auntie Dot's Memory Album

Girl Reserve Uniform
From Auntie Dot's Memory Album. Labeled "Dorothy".
Date unknown but taken around 1925.

The Class Picnic took place at Alum Rock;  Alum Rock Park in San Jose is California's oldest municipal park.  It sounded like a fun day with lots of activities,  weenies and ice cream!

 Graduation Exercises June 18, 1925

This is my favorite page....

"This book was given to me by Granna and Papa on June 15th, 1925"
"A beautiful wrist watch from Daddy (Van) June 17th, 1925".  George Van Duzer would become her step father in December of 1925.
"A lovely pearl bracelet and necklace from Mamma, June 17, 1925"
"A bouquet of Easter lilies & delphiniums from California Smith June 18, 1925" (a friend found in her School Days album)
"A basket of sweet peas, Baby's breath and roses from Betty June 18, 1925" Betty was Auntie Dot's youngest sister, and my grandmother.
"A box of candy was given me by Frances June 18, 1925" Auntie Fran was Auntie Dot's younger sister.
"Blue garters from Aunties Clara and family June" (not sure who this refers too....)
"Carnation and Roses from the whole family June 18, 1925"
"A French bouquet was presented to me from the boys of our class June 18, 1925"
"From Mrs. Rowen and family I received two lovely handkerchiefs and an address book. June 18, 1925"
"A card from Adele Melone"

Dorothy Rose Hayes.....her middle name was actually Ross, not Rose...

"Now there's Dorothy Hayes
To all of the party she stays
She tells us good jokes
Amuses the folks
And we all like her nice pleasant ways".....

Found at the back of her School Days album under "miscellaneous".

It was fun to go back in time to almost 100 years ago and look at my Auntie in a very different light as a young girl. After her mother Emma (Nana) married George Van Duzer and moved the family back to Grass Valley,  Auntie Dot attended Grass Valley High School and graduated in 1929.  Later in life she became a talented cake decorator and made many memorable family birthday cakes and celebration cakes.  She made my wedding cake!  She was always full of advice and unconditionally showered love and attention on her nieces and nephews (and then great nieces and nephews) as she never had children of her own after she married. She was a large part of my life growing up.

I'm glad she saved these mementos of that special event; they are like a time capsule ready to transport us right back to 1925.  Now, time to preserve them for the generations to come.....

52Ancestors52Weeks Week 45 Theme: Stormy Weather ........Snow , Snow and More Snow! Family Pictures Are Wonderful Documentation of Storms.....

This week's theme is stormy weather....I have always been struck by how many pictures I have of family members posing in the snow.  Living in Northern California and Northern Nevada always meant winter and spring snow storms.  What better way to remember the fun after the storm than by having your picture taken?

These are a few pictures taken from various family albums on both my mother's and father's side of the family.  They document how we all "weathered" the storms in our own  neck of the woods.  Enjoy!

*****

Written on back...."Gertrude Elizabeth, her two sleds and her two playmates and all the snow we've had this winter"  (no date).....probably taken around the early 20's.  Reno, Nevada.  Gertrude Burrows (middle) lived on Thoma Street in Reno with her parents Roy and Lucie Burrows.

Dorothy Ross Hayes  in the snow with her dog.  Auntie Dot was born May 17, 1910, and this picture looks like it may have been taken around 1915/16-ish.  Grass Valley, California.

Dorothy Hayes (Arthur) fourth in from the left and Betty Hayes (Hansen) on far right, bending over.  Auntie Dot was born in 1910, and Grandma (Betty) was born in 1917, so this was probably taken around the early 30's.  It looks like a girls' day out in the snow, somewhere in northern California, complete with skis and a sled.

Robley Hansen (Bob) with giant fur mittens.  Taken around the late 20's, early 30's.  Uncle Bob was living in Reno at this time.  From the Bob Hansen Family Album.

Claire and Margaret Hansen (Mom) wearing their wool snowsuits after a Grass Valley snowstorm around  1946-47? This is one of the pictures that survived the 1950 house fire.  This is one of my favorite pictures!

Lavinia Claire Hansen in her wool snowsuit.  Taken the same date as the above picture.

Millicent Gay Hansen on a toboggan on her way down a street in Reno, Nevada.  Gay was born March 9, 1934 so this picture may have been taken around 1936.  Her parents were Robley (Bob) and Alma Hansen.  From the Bob Hansen Family Album.

Skip Hansen and Greta in front of the new house on Arlington in Reno Nevada, 1948.  Skip's parents were Robley (Bob) and Alma Hansen.  From the Bob Hansen Family Album.

Alma and Bob Hansen after the snowstorm in 1948.  I love the perspective in this picture!   From the Bob Hansen Family Album.

*****

And, yes, I have pictures of houses and neighborhoods to go with pictures of people in the snow!

Francis (Hayes)  and Joe Holman's house in Grass Valley after a 1946 snowstorm.  Auntie Fran and Uncle Joe lived across the street from Nana (Emma King Hayes Van Duzer) and the Harold Hansen family on South Auburn street for awhile.  This is another picture that survived the fire at the Hansen house in 1950.  I believe this is the same storm that my Mom and Auntie Claire are pictured in above.

1012 S. Arlington, Reno, Nevada.  "First Winter in Home That Bob Built 1948".  Taken from the Bob Hansen Family Album.

Unknown young man shoveling snow in front of Grass Valley Drug mid to late 40's.  Sterl Boothby was owner and head pharmacist in the late 40's and then the 50's.

Frank and Dena Brondolo.  Picture taken in 1952, on Mainhart Drive,  Grass Valley, California.  They lived in San Francisco, but loved coming to Grass Valley and then up to Reno for some casino fun.  Frank was Terry Brondolo Boothby's (Nino's) older brother.  From the Brondolo Album.

Mainhart Drive in a snowstorm, sometime in the 50's.  Grass Valley, California.  This is the house that my Dad, Dale Boothby, grew up in!

Late 1960's snowstorm on Banner Mountain, Nevada City, California. That is Dad's (Dale's) jeep buried in the snow.  This is the house that I grew up in!

The Alden home after a January 2021 snowstorm, Reno, Nevada.

Still documenting!  (My Grandson ).....Reno, Nevada.
